Transitional/Independent Living
Fostering Youth Independence
Teens in foster care face many challenges as they move into adulthood and prepare for life on their own. While all youth may struggle during the journey to independence, those in out-of-home care often face additional challenges and can benefit from an extra level of support.
Independent living programs help teens and young adults in transition to achieve independence by providing shelter, support services, and resources that they might not be able to obtain otherwise.
Independent Living Support
OVP FAMILY’s Independent Living program is designed to help foster children who have aged out of the foster care system by placing them in safe, affordable housing and providing them with the skills and support needed to gain independence and transition successfully into adulthood. Assistance includes:
- Fully-Furnished Apartments
- Monthly Food Allowance
- Employment Assistance
- Educational Assistance
- Transportation Assistance
- Crisis Support
To Participate
To participate in the program, youth must meet state age requirements; be currently in foster care; be either working full-time, a full-time student, or doing both part-time; and attend all required independent living courses.
